WHAT IS LYMPHEDEMA?

Lymphoedema is the term used to describe swelling that can occur anywhere in your body. It most commonly affects the arms and legs and can occur for a variety of different reasons. It is important that a diagnosis is made about the underlying cause of the swelling from a qualified healthcare professional.

PRIMARY OR SECONDARY?

Primary lymphoedema can be present at birth, develop at puberty or mid-life and it relates to abnormal functioning of the lymphatic system.

Secondary lymphoedema can occur following treatment for cancer, varicose veins, recurrent infections, trauma or dependency.

It is not curable but there are ways to control and manage symptoms to improve your quality of life.

TREATMENT

Looking after your skin and keeping mobile is essential, which means self-management is extremely important.

Compression garments help reduce swelling and self-massage can be brought in to encourage your lymphatic system and encourage drainage. Intensive treatment may be considered. This would include bandaging, massaging or a combination of both.
